Final Score: Hitchin 14 - 4 Reading Hitchin's first home match of the season was against Reading. A couple of absentees meant that Hitchin only had 12 players and still needed to supply a referee. Reading meanwhile had travelled well and had 7 - 8 subs on the bench and even managed to supply 2 referees, meaning that the game was officiated by 3 referees. Reading started well in the first quarter and took the lead early on but Hitchin fought back to score 3 goals before quarter time. The second quarter saw more of the same with Hitchin scoring 3 goals to Reading's 1, which came from a fast break. After half time, a Reading hidden-ball trick saw two Hitchin players penalised for interference, however, Reading were unable to score against the 4-man zone and must have been very annoyed to see Hitchin score just seconds after returning to full strength. Again, Reading scored from a fast break, quarter score 3 - 1 to Hitchin. In the final quarter Hitchin's 11 players began to tire and were unable to ride as hard as in the previous quarters. However Hitchin had made Reading work equally hard and one of Reading's supporters was heard to observe 'You can see that Reading are getting tired now'. Needing quick scores, Reading began to double the ballcarrier which allowed Hitchin to find more openings and finish off the game scoring 5 goals to Reading's 1. Hitchin: Joe (GK), Bish, Alex, Dan, Rhod - 2, Jim, Ian, Steve - 5, Eamon - 4, Travis - 1 and Jonny - 2. Final score 14 - 4. |
